VoxBox Review: Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream

Describing my hair texture is tricky.  Some parts are curly.  Some are sort of wavy.  Others are awkwardly straight.  All of it is fluffy.

When I decided to dress up as Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween, I knew I wanted to do something fun with my hair.  I was going to go for pigtails, but I really wanted to amp up the texture.  Pressed for time and with nary a hot roller in sight, I gave Not Your Mother’s a try.

Straight from the tube, it looks like a thin hair gel and smells lovely.  The instructions are to towel dry hair, then apply throughout hair while scrunching.  I’ve test driven products like this before that resulted in my hair being crunchy and waveless.  Not so with Not Your Mother’s!  My hair was shiny, silky and lovely, full of beachy waves.  The waves stayed put all night, and then some (more on that later.)  I did a bit of lifting with my hair and it seemed to help hold that without any of the textural weirdness that gel can give.

The only surviving picture of me that night.

Given that my hair texture is a bit wavy naturally, the product mostly enhanced and tamed.  The straight clumps went a bit wavier, the wavy clumps were beachy and the curly bits went wavy without twisting too much.  It was a really lovely effect!  For people with stick-straight hair, I’m not sure this product is going to offer much other than a really lovely smell (grapey!) and a nice smoothing.  For those with naturally very curly hair, this would offer a nice shine and perhaps help keep your curls more together.

Given that it’s about $6 for 1.5 fl oz, I think it’s a pretty decent value considering that I didn’t need to use very much product at all to get great results.  I think it’s a definite buy for anyone who has weird, indecisive hair (like mine.)

Now it’s time for the part of my review that will probably squick most of you guys out.  I went to the party on Saturday.  I didn’t wash my hair until the following Friday.  Before you turn off your screen and never return to the internet again, I assure you–I didn’t need to wash my hair until then.  I typically can get two days out of my hair before it must be washed.  I don’t know what magic prevented the oil buildup, but it hasn’t ever happened before and never since.  And my hair kept trying to curl and hold waves.  It was actually a little weird.  I’m not going to advise any of you to do this.  But seriously.  I wore my hair the exact same way on Sunday, then wore it in side braids or spin pin buns all week.  And it was stilllll curly.

HALP MAH HURR ISH CURLEH

  1. You look GREAT in that Halloween picture!

I would describe my hair as “completely curly”. That’s the kind description. Other words can also apply: frizzy, dry, unkempt. It lives most of its life imprisoned in a ponytail.

But this sounds promising. I will have to see if Ulta sells it since I’m going there soon.

    1. Thank you so much!
Good luck experimenting with this product! I’d love to hear how it works for you.
Haha my hair is ALWAYS in side ponies, buns and braids. It’s so frizzy and floofy. And now that you mention it, I gotta get it trimmed this weekend! 😀
